I hope all is well, I too have SS Gene, and I'm 42, I celebrate every month of life. I am in a crisis now at home, been 7 months since I was hospitalized. The craziest thing is I had a crisis 1 time out the year or none up until 2015 and they caused me to go weekly or stay for weeks with a crisis, 2019 suffered from a heart attack cause by lack of blood flow oxygen and sickling in the heart, it's true it can damage organs. Also had acute chest syndrome 2 times in my late 20s early 30s. Diagnosed with lupus in June of 2022, I don't wish this on anyone. My mother is suffering from AIHA from past 2 years. She is under treatment @ appolo hospital kolkata under hematoalogist Dr Soumya Bhattacjarya. She was on steroid for around 1 year but it did not work , so now 4 rituximab injection is advised and 1 is already given but now found infection in her body after this. Thank You for sharing , my son was diagnosed at birth had his first blood transfusion within his first month of life. He was always tired, his teacher said he had psychological problems until he was assessed and found to be above in intelligence just physically ill, this after the teacher calling him names, disgracing him in front of other students and encouraging them to treat him poorly. When he was 7 years old he was having gall bladder attacks and had his spleen and gall bladder removed cutting him in half across his abdomen. We have lived his and mine and other family members lifetimes in hospital with this. He suffered digestive disorders from that time, instant pain on eating, gas and explosive diarrhea. Unable to leave a restaurant or home after eating until he had gone through that. He has been poked and prodded and IV'd, with nurses holding him down and continuing to poke him to find a vein while he cried and screamed no, until he is left as an adult disassociating when having a blood test. There are medical professionals who are not aware of spherocytosis and do not make themselves aware and when we have presented with a fever going from normal to 106 in 20 minutes have refused antibiotics. As an adult he tires easily and always has standby antibiotics, when his blood starts to go or infection sets in he can barely speak and can be unresponsive, to the point that if he were alone he would not be able to get help. Do not listen to these people who say we have it and all is fine, there are different levels of spherocytosis and one needs to know them all. My sons grandmother had her spleen out and is 95, her mother died at 35 with massive infection, my sons dad struggled with energy and is one of the few where his spherocytosis is linked to the cancer that killed him, my son has struggled all his life, holds down a responsible job but misses a lot of work, he is left with trauma from all the procedures and hospitalizations, it has and continues to affect the whole family.
